We are moving to Ireland in January, and are wondering about the possibility of moving our car. We don't really want to sell it, and will need one when we get to Dublin.
Has anyone heard of people doing this kind of thing?

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Sun, October 16, 2005 - 12:12 PMthis is probably something that you have already considered, but everyone drives on the left here... it might be more comfortable to have a left hand drive car in Dublin.
on the other hand, if you are shipping furniture, etc in a container, then it might be more economical to hire the entire container and bring your car as well as all your household goods. we moved over about 4 years ago, and paid $1000 CDN for a rather small pallet of boxes when we could have had a whole container if we spent $5000.

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Sun, October 16, 2005 - 1:23 PMHi Andrew.
I recommend that you sell you car in the U.S. and get another one after you get here. I don't know anything about the cost of bringing a car over. This is based solely on the safety of a left-hand-drive car in a right-hand-drive world. It's not just a matter of 'comfort'. It's much more dangerous when you're passing and turning. Ireland's roads are not like the States. They are much smaller and twistier and of poorer quality with very limited visibility in many cases.
Think about it. If you need to pass someone in the States, you might move a bit to the left to get a view around the slow guy in front of you. You're able to do that because you're driving position is on the left. If your driving position was on the right and you tried to do the same thing and there was traffic coming from the other direction, well, it would be a lot more dangerous.
Unless you have a really valuable classic car that you want to keep, you should not bring over a car from the States. Even then, you wouldn't want to drive your classic car here. You should get a new one and drive that and keep the classic one in storage.
One person's opinion (who moved from the States and sold his car first).

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 10:44 PMsell, sell, sell...not only is driving on the left versus the right a problem but..... the roads are tiny, and if you think the taxes and the gas prices and health care are bad in the USA just wait until you live here! :-D Good Luck, :::sends a lot of "give him and his family tons of patience" vibes:::, and I pray none in your family get sick and have to go to an Irish hospital. -

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 10:46 PMoh and btw in Baile Atha Cliath (Dublin) having a car is absurd because a) you can walk EVERYWHERE, b) not unless you want to pay several thousand euro for your own personal space or constantly pay garage fees, and c) traffic getting in and out of Dublin (except Sunday) takes atleast one to two hours. -

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Thu, December 8, 2005 - 8:45 AMThe people I've spoken to here think it's OK. There are certainly some challenges (crowded emergency rooms, delays for elective surgeries) but the public coverage is far better than in the States. The Irish seem to be quite proud of the way they take care of their own.

Re: Moving a car to Ireland from North America
Fri, September 8, 2006 - 12:11 PMI know someone who shipped one from Los Angeles to Ireland when they were moving back and they said it was one of the most stupid things they ever did in their life. It turned out to be a major pain in the arse for them. On top of all the hassles of trying to drive a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side, they had to on a fairly regular basis park in a multi story car park and cross a toll bridge, both of which meant they had to undo their seat belt and lean across to the window on the passenger side just to pay their parking fee/bridge toll... while getting silly grin's and comments from the person taking their money. When I asked why didn't they just sell it the response was "who in their right mind would buy a petrol guzzling import with the feckin' steering wheel on the wrong effin' side". A slight air of discontentment in their response. Ahem.
Don't do it!!!!
